Congress Turns to Supreme Court Over Disqualified Rajya Sabha Nomination

Labeling the Supreme Court as the party's last hope, Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel has challenged the disqualification of Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination. The legal battle centers on a contested Returning Officer's decision to reject her candidacy for the upcoming biennial elections, citing an undeclared pending criminal case.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the party before Justices PK Mishra and Atul S. Chandurkar, pressed for an immediate intervention or a clear interim directive to rectify what he described as a biased process. Singhvi argued that the Returning Officer’s justification lacks legal standing, noting that Natarajan has only received a summons rather than facing formal criminal charges.

The Congress leadership maintains that the rejection of the Madhya Pradesh representative’s nomination was grounded in procedural prejudice. With the court set to hear the matter imminently, the party is seeking a swift reversal of the disqualification to ensure Natarajan remains in the running for the parliamentary seat.
