Fujimori Edges Ahead in Razor-Thin Peruvian Presidential Count

With a margin of just 650 votes, Keiko Fujimori has overtaken leftist rival Roberto Sanchez in Peru’s volatile presidential race. Overseas ballots delivered late Wednesday pushed Fujimori to 50.002%, triggering heightened scrutiny as the national electoral authority, ONPE, nears the final tally of 18 million votes.

The current count stands at 98.21% of polling stations processed, leaving the outcome suspended on a knife-edge. Roughly 1.76% of the total vote, concentrated primarily in Lima, remains sidelined for judicial review. This process is expected to drag on for several weeks, ensuring the political atmosphere remains charged as both camps weigh their next legal maneuvers.

Fujimori maintains a stance of cautious optimism, while Sanchez has publicly flagged what he characterizes as suspicious electoral irregularities. His supporters have already begun gathering outside election offices to protest the tight results. With the candidates separated by less than a fraction of a percent, the pressure on electoral officials to ensure transparency is intensifying.
