Alaska Election Officials Probe Candidate Over Name Confusion

Alaska Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom has opened an investigation into Senate candidate Daniel James Sullivan Jr., following claims that the challenger intentionally adopted the name of the Republican incumbent to deceive voters. The inquiry focuses on whether the campaign strategy violates state election integrity laws ahead of the August primary.

The controversy centers on the candidate’s use of the name "Dan Sullivan" on his official campaign website, which closely mimics the identity of the sitting U.S. Senator. Daniel James Sullivan Jr., a former Forest Service employee, formally entered the race on May 29 with the provocative slogan "Dan Sullivan Challenges Dan Sullivan for U.S. Senate Seat."

State officials are now examining allegations that the challenger coordinated with external actors to exploit the name similarity and identical party affiliation. Should the investigation conclude that the filing was designed to mislead the electorate, the lieutenant governor may move to disqualify him from the August 18 primary ballot.
