Debashish Samantaray Files Rajya Sabha Nomination in Odisha

Flanked by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and state party leadership, Debashish Samantaray submitted his nomination for the Rajya Sabha by-election in Bhubaneswar today. The display of unity at the Odisha Assembly signals the BJP's intent to solidify its influence in the upper house following Samantaray’s recent defection from the BJD.

Samantaray did not hold back when discussing his departure from the Biju Janata Dal. He pointed to the 2024 elections as a turning point, claiming that the elevation of a South Indian successor to Naveen Patnaik alienated the party base and deeply offended Odia sentiments. He characterized the BJD's recent electoral performance as a direct consequence of this internal leadership vacuum.

Following his move to the BJP, Samantaray credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior party officials for facilitating his transition. His candidacy is part of a broader national push by the BJP, which has nominated 11 candidates for the 24 Rajya Sabha seats currently up for grabs across ten states. This bypoll serves as a strategic marker for the party's ambition to bolster its legislative numbers.
