Pia Dandiya Wins Florida Seat to Become Second Indian-American Congresswoman

With 51.9 percent of the vote, 39-year-old Democrat Pia Dandiya has secured Florida's 22nd Congressional District. The former high school principal’s victory over Republican businessman Casey Askar marks a historic milestone, making her only the second Indian-American woman ever elected to the United States House of Representatives.

A Palm Beach County native, Dandiya’s path to Capitol Hill began with a focus on education and public service. After graduating from Harvard and earning a master’s degree from Boston University, she served as the founding principal of Democracy Prep Endurance High School in Harlem. Her career includes a stint as a White House Fellow and leadership roles in public-sector initiatives at Apple. She also served on the Illinois P-20 Council under Governor JB Pritzker.

Dandiya’s campaign prioritized addressing the rising cost of living, healthcare, and gun safety, resonating with voters frustrated by what she termed "performative politics." The race was defined by significant financial backing, with both candidates drawing millions in support. Despite being outspent by Askar, who relied heavily on personal loans, Dandiya secured key endorsements, including support from the Indian American Impact Fund and local Republican leadership like Wellington Mayor Michael Napoleone. She now prepares to join Pramila Jayapal as a voice for the Indian-American community in the House.
