Trump Faces Midterm Reckoning as Control of Congress Hangs in Balance

With all 435 House seats and 35 Senate spots on the ballot, voters are set to deliver a verdict on the first two years of Donald Trump’s second term. The President has framed the midterms as a referendum on his own tenure, even as his party faces historical headwinds and sagging approval ratings.

The political landscape remains volatile, with Democrats eyeing a House takeover while the Senate remains a toss-up. Republicans are battling the traditional midterm slump that typically punishes the incumbent’s party. Voter frustration, fueled by rising energy costs stemming from the Iran conflict and broader economic anxiety, complicates the path for GOP candidates. Trump has aggressively campaigned to turn the tide, branding his opponents as extreme, yet polling indicates that affordability remains the primary motivator for the electorate.

Should Democrats capture either chamber, they gain the power to launch oversight investigations and obstruct the President’s judicial and cabinet appointments. The stakes are particularly high in states like Michigan, where the Senate race has been upended by the unusual endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers by Democrat Haley Stevens. Meanwhile, in Alaska, the Justice Department has launched an investigation into allegations that Mary Peltola’s campaign sought to manipulate the ballot through a candidate-recruitment scheme involving similar names.

Across the country, 47 House districts are currently identified as highly competitive, requiring Democrats to flip only 13 to secure a majority. To ensure election integrity, the Justice Department plans to deploy 1,000 monitors to polling stations nationwide. These efforts come amid heightened tensions, as Democrats express concern over Trump’s litigious approach to election challenges, which deviates from established norms for managing ballot disputes. Beyond the federal contests, races for 36 governorships and dozens of state legislative seats will decide the future of local tax policy and reproductive rights.
