Russian Strike on Aid Center Kills 31 in Zaporizhzhia

Thirty-one people are dead and nearly 50 remain missing after a double-tap airstrike hit a humanitarian distribution point in the frontline village of Komyshuvakha. The Monday attack targeted a local school where residents had gathered to collect aid, prompting an immediate condemnation from Kyiv and renewed international outcry.

The strike occurred as civilians arrived at the school, which had been repurposed as a shelter and aid hub. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the initial aerial bombardment was followed by a second strike specifically targeting the site as rescue teams and police arrived. Emergency services confirmed that among the casualties were four police officers and two rescue workers. Mykhailo Semikin, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that at least five others sustained injuries.

Russian officials disputed the account, asserting that their forces struck Ukrainian military units near Komyshuvakha rather than civilian infrastructure. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed the operation killed 25 soldiers and destroyed 15 vehicles. This disparity in reporting reflects the broader volatility surrounding the conflict, which UN monitors recently noted has seen a sharp increase in civilian casualties since July.

The timing of the bombing complicates upcoming diplomatic efforts, as Washington prepares to host Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Abu Dhabi on November 10. These talks aim to address security arrangements and potential de-escalation measures before the winter sets in. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha leveraged the incident to intensify calls for Russia’s isolation, arguing that such actions should preclude the country’s reintegration into international sporting and diplomatic forums.
