86-Year-Old Sailor and Dog Rescued After Two Months Adrift in Pacific

Floating 460 miles off the San Diego coast, an 86-year-old sailor and his dog were pulled from the Pacific Ocean this week after surviving more than 60 days of isolation. The pair had been missing since late August when equipment failure left their vessel, the Willow Wind, drifting helplessly at sea.

The U.S. Coast Guard initiated the rescue mission after receiving a signal from an emergency radio beacon registered to the vessel. A passing commercial cargo ship intercepted the boat, bringing the man and his pet aboard before medical teams arrived to assess their condition. Despite the extended duration at sea with limited supplies, both survivors remained in stable health.

Upon reaching port, the mariner was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital. While he exhibited signs of weakness and difficulty walking, medical personnel confirmed he sustained no major injuries during the ordeal. Coast Guard Cmdr. Jason Nguyen credited the successful outcome to the presence of emergency communication equipment on board, noting that such gear proved vital for their survival and eventual location.
