The final tally, processed from 99.95% of precinct protocols, confirms a decisive mandate for the Iotova-Valchev ticket, which garnered approximately 1.1 million ballots against the 749,500 cast for their opposition. This result follows a tight contest on October 25, where neither side managed to clear the threshold required for an immediate win, forcing a high-stakes Sunday runoff.
Iotova ascended to the acting presidency in January after the resignation of Rumen Radev, who vacated the office to successfully pursue a seat in parliament. Her victory cements the influence of Radev’s political camp, ensuring a seamless continuation of his existing foreign policy agenda. Central to this platform is a persistent call for a diplomatic resolution to the war in Ukraine, a stance that sets the administration apart from several other European leaders currently navigating the complexities of the conflict. By maintaining this alignment with Radev, Iotova signals that Bulgaria will likely prioritize negotiation over alternative approaches to the regional crisis.
