Anthropic Targets $3.5 Billion in Japanese IPO Expansion

In a strategic bid to bypass stagnant domestic capital markets, AI startup Anthropic is opening its US initial public offering to Japanese investors, aiming to secure up to $3.5 billion. The move provides rare international access to the Claude developer’s shares as local offerings in Japan hit a 14-year low.

Mizuho Securities Co. will spearhead the Japanese portion of the offering, supported by a banking syndicate including Goldman Sachs, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley, and Morgan Stanley MUFG. Beyond Japan, the company has extended purchase eligibility to investors in Australia, Canada, and select European regions, broadening its reach as it prepares for a high-stakes debut.

The timing of the raise places Anthropic in direct competition with broader market movements. With tech giants like Meta Platforms and Alphabet pursuing massive equity financing rounds—targeting $95 billion and $85 billion respectively—the market is bracing for a glut of AI-related paper. Anthropic’s ability to capture capital will serve as a critical barometer for investor appetite in a sector currently saturated with competing share sales.
