US and Japan Launch Joint Missile Production to Bolster Asian Defense

The United States and Japan are establishing a domestic facility in Japan to co-produce advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles, a strategic move aimed at enhancing deterrence capabilities. Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced the project, dubbed Operation Supercharge, following discussions with US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in Cebu.

The initiative targets the production of missiles essential for the F-35 fighter jet, an aircraft operated by both nations. During the meeting held on the sidelines of an annual summit of Southeast Asian defense chiefs, Koizumi emphasized the urgency of the regional security environment, noting that the alliance must respond with greater intensity than previously seen. While the officials avoided explicitly naming China, the agreement serves as a direct response to rising concerns over unilateral attempts to alter the status quo in the Indo-Pacific through force or coercion.

Secretary Hegseth underscored the Trump administration's commitment to maintaining a robust regional posture, describing the US approach as strong and clear. This defense cooperation arrives amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea, where Beijing’s expansive territorial claims have led to frequent confrontations with neighbors including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Washington continues to reiterate its treaty obligations to defend the Philippines against armed attacks, while Tokyo remains locked in its own maritime disputes with Beijing over islands in the East China Sea.
