Netanyahu and Eisenkot Clash Over Iran Policy Amid Election Deadlock

As exit polls reveal a razor-thin margin between Benjamin Netanyahu and challenger Gadi Eisenkot, the future of Israel’s Iran strategy hangs in the balance. The two leaders present opposing visions for the Jewish state: one favoring aggressive military posture and US alignment, the other advocating for economic pressure and strategic independence.

Gadi Eisenkot, a former IDF chief of staff who lost his son in the Gaza conflict, argues that regime change in Tehran is unrealistic. Instead, he favors a policy of economic strangulation, supporting military strikes on nuclear facilities only to prevent all-out war. His platform marks a departure from Netanyahu’s reliance on Washington, with Eisenkot insisting that Israel must cultivate the capacity to act independently of US influence.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, has doubled down on his hawkish stance. CNN reports that the Prime Minister lobbied Donald Trump for joint US-Israel strikes on Iran ahead of the polls, a request the White House allegedly denied. Netanyahu dismissed these claims as fabrications while maintaining his narrative that his personal relationship with Washington remains the country’s primary security asset.

The election results leave the Knesset in a state of political paralysis. While Netanyahu’s coalition faces a significant rebuke, the opposition’s path to power is complicated by the need to integrate Arab-led factions. Netanyahu has already branded such a coalition as treasonous, signaling that the weeks of parliamentary maneuvering ahead will be as volatile as the campaign itself.
