The disinformation campaign centers on Sherrod Brown in Ohio and James Talarico in Texas. The video targeting Brown uses a fabricated newscast featuring Haya Akbik, a former intern whose likeness and identity were hijacked to spread false allegations. Akbik described the content as entirely manufactured, noting the harm caused to both her reputation and the candidate. Meanwhile, the clip aimed at Talarico presents a scripted confessional from a supposed former student, a tactic his campaign spokesperson JT Ennis branded as a desperate attempt to undermine the candidate through slander when traditional political arguments fail.
Media forensic expert Darren Linvill of Clemson University identifies these videos as hallmarks of Storm-1516, a Russian network previously implicated in spreading disinformation about high-profile Democratic figures. Dartmouth professor Hany Farid, who analyzed the footage, confirmed the use of AI manipulation, noting that the content aligns with established patterns of foreign interference designed to peak just before voters head to the polls. While the platform X has removed the original posts and suspended associated accounts, copies continue to circulate. The persistence of these clips highlights the structural challenge of policing synthetic media, as the Russian Embassy and the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have declined to comment on the latest developments.
