Beattie and Pita have focused their efforts on shifting momentum toward Senator Flavio Bolsonaro following the 2025 imprisonment of his father, Jair Bolsonaro, for his role in a coup attempt. The pair reportedly instructed embassy staff to sideline other conservative challengers, effectively consolidating support around the Bolsonaro name. Their strategy has relied on "free speech diplomacy," a policy framework utilized to penalize countries that censor right-wing rhetoric. This approach manifested in the July 2025 imposition of Global Magnitsky sanctions against Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, whom the US accused of overreaching by suppressing social media content.
The Mechanics of Intervention
The duo’s influence extended to orchestrating the classification of Brazilian gangs as terrorist organizations, a move intended to damage President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s political standing. Eduardo Bolsonaro cultivated this connection, meeting with Beattie to lobby for sanctions that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent ultimately did not oppose. While these actions were designed to weaken the current administration, the results have been inconsistent. Although the US imposed tariffs and visa restrictions, these measures failed to derail Jair Bolsonaro’s trial and faced significant pushback from the business community. Despite the subsequent removal of Justice Moraes from the sanctions list and travel bans issued against Beattie by Brazilian authorities, the campaign underscores a deepening desire within certain US circles to reshape South American politics through aggressive executive action.
