The process hinges on nuclear transmutation, where mercury-198 is exposed to fusion-generated neutrons to create mercury-197, an isotope that eventually decays into stable gold-197. This approach fundamentally differs from chemical reactions, as it modifies the atom’s nucleus to change its elemental identity. Marathon Fusion claims this technique is significantly more efficient than the 29 picograms of gold produced by CERN researchers between 2015 and 2018.
Despite the bold announcement, the startup has withheld critical data regarding production volume, purity, and the economic viability of the process. While Marathon Fusion suggests that future commercial fusion reactors could theoretically generate two tonnes of gold annually, such projections remain speculative. Beyond precious metal production, the firm is researching the synthesis of radioactive isotopes intended for medical applications, including cancer diagnosis and treatment. Until external experts can audit the experimental data, the claim remains an unproven technological assertion.
