State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott confirmed the departure order on X, clarifying that the mandate applies exclusively to non-essential staff and family members residing within the kingdom. The decision arrives as Saudi Arabia faces near-daily aerial assaults, including a recent major strike on Riyadh’s international airport that marked one of the deadliest escalations in years.
Tensions in the region remain volatile following the collapse of a four-year truce in Yemen’s civil war this past June. While the Saudi-led coalition continues to intercept incoming drones, the security environment has deteriorated rapidly. Beyond the immediate threat from Yemen, reports of unexplained explosions in Iran’s Hormozgan province near the Strait of Hormuz have further heightened regional instability. The ongoing conflict, which intensified following US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year, has turned the strategic waterway into a focal point of international maritime friction and counter-blockade measures.
