Rubio Shifts Starlink Oversight Responsibility to Musk

Secretary of State Marco Rubio maintains that control over Ukraine’s access to Starlink rests with SpaceX and Elon Musk rather than the White House. This assertion complicates existing reports of a deliberate service slowdown, casting a spotlight on the blurred lines between private commercial contracts and sensitive national security operations.

Rubio Shifts Starlink Oversight Responsibility to Musk

The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Musk ordered a reduction in the speed of military-grade Starlink services used by Ukrainian forces to counter Russian missile attacks. While some officials suggest the White House directed these restrictions, the administration has consistently denied such involvement. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has publicly cited disruptions in both Starlink and the specialized Starshield network, yet Rubio insists that access remains a matter of private commercial terms.

Pantagon chief Pete Hegseth echoed this stance, framing the controversy as a strictly contractual issue governed by SpaceX’s service agreements. Rubio acknowledged he lacked prior knowledge of the specific decisions regarding service speed, emphasizing that the technology operates under private oversight. Despite conflicting accounts from Western officials, the current administration continues to distance itself from the operational control of the satellite network, leaving Musk’s influence on foreign policy as a point of friction in Washington.
