Somalia Shifts Focus from Aid to Private Sector Investment

At the Somali Development Finance Forum in Mogadishu, government officials and the African Development Bank Group signaled a pivot toward long-term domestic economic growth. Moving beyond traditional aid reliance, the strategy emphasizes building local institutional capacity to turn investment commitments into sustainable, job-creating projects across key productive sectors.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama outlined a vision for mobilizing capital into agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and renewable energy. The objective is to establish a credible, long-term financing system that supports small and medium-sized enterprises. Success hinges on developing a pipeline of commercially viable projects that can attract private capital while effectively managing investment risks.

Alex Mubiru, the African Development Bank’s Director General for East Africa, stressed that institutional strength remains the primary hurdle for sustainable development. By focusing resources on high-potential value chains, Somalia aims to create measurable economic resilience. This effort received a practical boost as the Somali Development and Reconstruction Bank (SDRB) signed new partnership agreements with Asal, Maal, and Himilo Microfinance to expand Sharia-compliant funding for local businesses. These steps reflect a broader regional strategy, codified in the bank's 2025–2030 Country Strategy Paper, to integrate Somalia into a more stable, production-led economic framework.
