US Lifts Sanctions on Russian Diesel Exports Through 2027

The US Treasury Department has authorized transactions involving Russian diesel fuel through April 7, 2027, following a high-level agreement between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. This move arrives as the administration scrambles to stabilize volatile fuel markets and mitigate price surges ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.

The authorization permits the sale, delivery, and importation of Russian-origin diesel, reversing previous restrictions that had tightened global supply chains. President Trump confirmed the deal via Truth Social, detailing an immediate influx of 300,000 tons of fuel, with scheduled increases of 500,000 tons in November and a subsequent shipment of one million tons. Future deliveries are projected to reach 3 million tons, contingent upon the operational capacity of Russian refineries.

Global diesel prices have remained elevated due to a combination of factors, including Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refining infrastructure and Houthi militia attacks on Saudi Arabian facilities. These disruptions previously forced Moscow to halt exports, exacerbating shortages. By reopening access to Russian supplies, the White House aims to provide immediate relief to domestic gas prices, though the policy shift marks a significant departure from the existing sanctions framework.
