UNDP and World Bank Partner to Spur Economic Growth in Five Nations

Nepal, Yemen, Haiti, Lebanon, and Ghana will serve as the first testing grounds for a new cooperation framework between the UNDP and the World Bank. The initiative aims to move beyond simple project funding by systematically reforming local business regulations and strengthening public institutions to attract private investment.

The agreement, formalized by UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo and World Bank President Ajay Banga, seeks to bridge the gap between development goals and private-sector realities. Rather than focusing solely on capital injection, the collaboration targets the underlying conditions that dictate business growth, such as contract enforcement, regulatory clarity, and anti-corruption measures. By aligning institutional reform with local development needs, the organizations intend to lower the risks that currently deter investors in fragile or emerging markets.

In regions destabilized by conflict, the strategy emphasizes the restoration of public trust and essential services as a prerequisite for economic recovery. The joint approach integrates the World Bank’s jobs agenda and its strategy for addressing fragility with the UNDP’s ongoing efforts in crisis stabilization and long-term economic planning. This pilot phase will provide a template for connecting immediate recovery efforts with sustainable employment, ensuring that policy advice is matched by practical, on-the-ground implementation support.
