Germany’s Machinery Sector Faces Extended Slump

German machinery production is on track for a fourth consecutive year of contraction, as the VDMA slashed its 2026 outlook amid a persistent 4.1% output drop through July. Despite the grim short-term data, industry analysts are pinning their hopes on a modest market rebound starting in 2027.

The revised forecast signals a 2% decline in real terms for the current year, underscoring the severity of the industrial malaise gripping Europe's largest economy. While order books have shown flickers of life, domestic demand remains dangerously thin, preventing any meaningful stabilization across the sector.

Johannes Gernandt, chief economist at the VDMA, pointed to emerging optimism among manufacturers regarding future business conditions. This sentiment supports projections for a 3% increase in real production by 2027, provided the current uptick in orders translates into actual capital investment. For now, however, the industry remains locked in a cycle of stagnation that defies rapid recovery.
