Seoul Puts $350 Billion U.S. Investment Briefing on Hold

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun confirmed a delay in unveiling the nation’s massive $350 billion U.S. investment roadmap, citing the need for further procedural clarity. The postponement comes as Seoul navigates complex negotiations with Washington over trade terms and import tariffs ahead of high-level diplomatic talks.

The government scrubbed this week’s planned briefing to a parliamentary committee, pushing the presentation to September 22. This session serves as a critical prerequisite for finalizing the scale and scope of South Korea’s industrial commitments to the United States. Cho announced the shift while traveling to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to iron out remaining friction points.

At the heart of the delay are active discussions surrounding the reduction of import tariffs. The investment package remains ambitious, centering on energy infrastructure and manufacturing. Key components include a proposed strategic stake in Westinghouse, alongside large-scale energy projects involving gas power facilities in Texas and liquid natural gas ventures in Alaska. Officials maintain that these procedural hurdles must be cleared to ensure the final deal aligns with both nations' economic priorities.
