If Venus once hosted a satellite, it likely met a violent end at the hands of the planet's own gravity. New research suggests that Venus’s sluggish rotation created tidal forces that inevitably pulled any orbiting moon inward, resulting in the satellite being torn apart and consumed by the planet.

Why Venus Lost Its Moon to Tidal Destruction

Dr. Stephen Kane of the University of California, Riverside, led a team using computer simulations to model the life cycle of a hypothetical Venusian moon. Their findings, published in the Astrophysical Journal, indicate that the survival of such a companion depended entirely on the planet's spin. While a rapid rotation—a day lasting under 12 hours—might have stabilized a moon for billions of years, the slow, retrograde motion observed today would have doomed it to a slow spiral toward the surface.

These simulations demonstrate that a moon could have persisted for up to 1.7 billion years before succumbing to gravitational stress. The study suggests that the same giant impacts that likely forced Venus into its current slow rotation would have created the very debris disks necessary to form a moon. Rather than requiring a second, catastrophic event to explain the planet's barren sky, the researchers propose that tidal evolution is a natural consequence of the planet's formative collisions. This mechanism provides a blueprint for understanding exoplanets, suggesting that slow-rotating worlds throughout the galaxy may be inherently incapable of retaining large moons.
