Congress Investigates Russian Funding of Trump Jr. Wedding

Representative Robert Garcia has launched a formal inquiry into reports that Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman with ties to the Kremlin, financed lavish festivities for Donald Trump Jr. in the Bahamas. The investigation examines whether the substantial payments constitute a gift or a potential influence-peddling scheme involving foreign interests.

The probe follows a ProPublica report alleging that Kremlev, who leads the International Boxing Association, covered the costs of two after-parties during the three-day event in May. Garcia, the senior Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, publicly questioned the motivations behind such a high-profile financial contribution from an associate of Vladimir Putin.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer escalated the rhetoric on Tuesday, labeling the arrangement a national security risk and characterizing the payments as a potential bribe from a foreign autocrat. While a representative for Trump Jr. declined to comment, his wife, Bettina Trump, maintained that Kremlev is a personal friend who provided an extraordinarily generous gift. President Trump, who did not attend the ceremony, dismissed the controversy as insignificant, stating he has no personal relationship with the financier. The IBA and Kremlev have not responded to requests for comment.
