The industrial sector served as the primary engine for this expansion, posting a robust 7.3% increase. Agriculture and services followed with more modest gains of 2.3% and 2.7%, respectively. Despite these figures, the economic landscape remains volatile. Inflation climbed to 8% in August, driven by elevated global oil prices that have forced domestic increases in fuel pump prices and upward pressure on interest rates, further complicated by a depreciated rupee.
Ranjan Ranatunga of First Capital Holdings suggests that oil prices may eventually stabilize in the $80 to $90 per barrel range, potentially easing the strain on domestic consumption. Analysts now anticipate a slight moderation in momentum, projecting overall growth to settle between 3% and 4% for the remainder of the year.
