The project targets a comprehensive upgrade of double-track, electrified lines, enabling passenger trains to reach 160 km/h and freight services to hit 120 km/h. By removing existing bottlenecks, the initiative seeks to serve an annual volume of four million passengers and six million tonnes of cargo. Enhanced infrastructure will also support longer, heavier freight trains, facilitating more efficient logistics connections between central Romania and wider European markets.
Beyond speed, the modernization focuses on accessibility and safety, implementing the European Rail Traffic Management System across the route. Stations will be refurbished to remove physical barriers for passengers with reduced mobility. EIB Vice-President Ioannis Tsakiris noted the project serves as a bridge for regional connectivity, while Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare emphasized its role in fostering long-term economic competitiveness. By shifting transit demand from road to rail, the upgrade intends to mitigate environmental impacts, including noise and greenhouse gas emissions, while providing a more reliable alternative for both commuters and commercial operators.
