Aliko Dangote, the Kano-born tycoon who built his empire from humble beginnings trading sugar and rice in 1977, is preparing to list the refinery on the Nigerian stock exchange this November. The move marks a pivotal moment for Dangote Industries, transitioning from a private conglomerate into a publicly traded entity of global scale. At 69, Dangote intends to deploy the capital raised to double the refinery’s processing capacity while simultaneously breaking ground on a new venture in Kenya.
Despite his status as an economic titan, the project has faced scrutiny regarding its market dominance and close ties to political spheres. Critics point to potential monopolistic risks, yet Dangote continues to frame the refinery as a necessary engine for African independence from imported fuel. This listing positions the refinery among the top ten facilities of its kind worldwide, signaling a shift in the continent’s industrial landscape.
