Chidambaram Calls for Sustained Dialogue with Beijing

Following the recent meeting between Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping at the BRICS summit, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram has pushed for a shift in diplomatic strategy. He argues that consistent, transparent engagement is the only viable path to resolving deep-seated tensions over border security and trade disputes between India and China.

Chidambaram Calls for Sustained Dialogue with Beijing

Chidambaram criticized the current administration for prioritizing photo opportunities over substantive public reporting. According to the MP, Indian citizens are entitled to transparent accounts of what transpires during high-level diplomatic exchanges. He maintains that while complex geopolitical friction cannot be erased overnight, the government must commit to a rigorous and strategic dialogue process rather than relying on brief interactions.

Regarding the BRICS summit, Chidambaram expressed skepticism toward the group’s joint declaration condemning terrorism. While he acknowledged the symbolic importance of the statement, he questioned its practical efficacy given the divergent interests of member nations. He warned that such pledges ring hollow if member states continue to provide covert support to entities condemned under the pact, specifically citing Pakistan. For Chidambaram, the credibility of BRICS rests entirely on whether its members are willing to enforce these standards beyond the conference room.
