Aliko Dangote Opens Africa’s Largest IPO to Retail Investors

With 4.1 billion shares hitting the market at 525 naira apiece, Aliko Dangote has launched Africa’s most ambitious share sale to date. The offering, which runs through October 13, invites ordinary Nigerians to claim a financial stake in the $20 billion oil refinery that has fundamentally reshaped the nation’s energy landscape.

The refinery, a cornerstone of Nigeria's industrial sector, seeks to raise 2.15 trillion naira, or roughly $1.6 billion, in its initial phase. Should demand exceed expectations, a greenshoe option could push the total haul toward $2.1 billion. For local investors like Lagos business owner Chris Chijioke, the appeal lies in the sheer scale of the operation and Dangote’s track record of turning massive infrastructure projects into profitable enterprises.

Since commencing operations in 2024, the facility has become a vital hedge against global fuel volatility. By capturing market share during supply disruptions—including those stemming from conflict in Iran—the refinery has successfully exported jet fuel to Europe and Africa while stabilizing domestic gasoline supplies. Dangote is leveraging digital platforms to ensure retail accessibility, moving beyond traditional institutional backing to anchor the refinery’s future in the pockets of the everyday Nigerian consumer.
