Prabowo Reshuffles Finance Ministry Amid Fiscal Strain

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has replaced Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa with deputy Suahasil Nazara, a move signaling an urgent pivot in fiscal strategy. The transition, confirmed Monday at the state palace, follows a period of mounting economic pressure and friction between the ministry and the central bank.

Nazara, a veteran of the ministry since 2019, faces the immediate task of stabilizing a volatile economic environment. During his swearing-in, he signaled a return to fiscal orthodoxy, specifically committing to maintain the budget deficit below the 3% GDP threshold. This stance aims to restore investor confidence following a year defined by a weakening rupiah and a series of credit rating downgrades.

The removal of Purbaya reflects the administration's frustration with recent monetary management. His tenure was marked by aggressive liquidity injections into the banking sector, a policy that frequently collided with the central bank’s objectives. By installing Nazara, the President seeks to mend these institutional fractures and curb the deficit concerns that have rattled international markets.
