The capital will primarily bankroll the transition of the company’s lead candidate, ETH47, into Phase 2b clinical trials. Unlike traditional treatments targeting specific viral proteins, ETH47 is designed to stimulate the body’s innate immune system directly at the entry point of infection. By activating this early defense mechanism, the company aims to provide broad-spectrum protection against various viral families, potentially preventing severe symptom flare-ups in patients with chronic respiratory conditions.
Beyond the primary respiratory program, the agreement supports the advancement of Ethris’ mucosal influenza vaccine candidates, ETH52 and ETH53. These projects focus on stable mRNA technologies capable of nasal administration, a delivery method favored by EIB officials for its potential to provide localized immune responses. CEO Carsten Rudolph noted that the funding serves as a vital proof-of-concept step, moving the firm closer to demonstrating whether these treatments can effectively mitigate viral transmission and long-term respiratory decline. The investment also aligns with broader European efforts to bolster domestic biotechnology capacity and prepare for future health emergencies.
