Meta Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Unauthorized Biometric Data Harvesting

The 66-page filing alleges that Meta’s data practices extend beyond mere image storage, potentially converting user photos into biometric signatures. According to the complaint, these digital faceprints allow the NameTag system to identify individuals by cross-referencing captured footage with public Instagram accounts. The plaintiffs also contend that Meta’s generative AI models, Emu and Muse Image, were trained using harvested biometric data taken from user profiles dating back to September 2021.

Meta has rejected the allegations, characterizing the lawsuit as a fundamental misrepresentation of its technology development. A company spokesperson stated that the NameTag system has not been released to the public and that no definitive decisions regarding its deployment have been finalized. The proposed class, which could encompass millions of users across California, Illinois, and the broader United States, seeks to hold the company accountable for the unauthorized conversion of personal imagery into identification tools.
