Researchers at Jinan University discovered that heating tap water for five minutes eliminates up to 80% of microplastic contaminants, offering a practical method to reduce daily intake of synthetic particles that evade conventional purification.

The study, led by Dr. Eddy Zeng, focused on the efficacy of heat in neutralizing common plastic compounds like polystyrene, polyethylene, and polypropylene. While these materials often fragment into nanoplastics small enough to breach the intestinal lining and the blood-brain barrier, the boiling process triggers a chemical reaction that traps these particles within mineral deposits. This effect is particularly pronounced in hard water, where mineral content significantly enhances the capture of plastic debris.

Dr. Zeng notes that this strategy can reduce daily nanoplastic consumption by two to five times compared to untreated tap water. Although the long-term health consequences of microplastic ingestion remain a subject of ongoing investigation, this simple kitchen intervention provides a measurable reduction in exposure. Integrating a five-minute boil into daily water preparation routines serves as a functional, low-cost defense against the pervasive presence of synthetic polymers in municipal water supplies.
