Researchers Tao Song, Shiyu Wang, and Zhouying Song analyzed the development of the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network, where trade between Tibet and Nepal surged to CNY 3.14 billion by October 2024. Using Q-methodology to survey 32 local stakeholders, the authors identified five competing development visions. These range from prioritizing rapid infrastructure delivery to focusing on climate adaptation, institutional capacity, and inclusive economic growth. The study highlights a fundamental tension: while transport and energy links can drive poverty reduction, they often collide with the region's inherent vulnerability to landslides and environmental degradation.
The findings suggest that the corridor’s long-term stability requires integrating sustainability into the design phase rather than treating it as an afterthought. Policymakers face the challenge of aligning sectoral priorities—such as transport, environment, and local governance—within a unified framework. By addressing these disparate viewpoints, proponents argue that infrastructure projects can evolve from simple transit routes into tools for regional capacity building. Ultimately, the Himalayan case serves as a critical test for infrastructure development across the Global South, where the pressure for quick economic gains frequently competes with the necessity of preserving fragile mountain ecosystems.
