Indian Sailors Caught in Crossfire of Strait of Hormuz Conflict

The footage reveals a tense confrontation as IRGC vessels surrounded the container ship, culminating in the firing of a rocket-propelled grenade. While the Indian crew members ultimately emerged unharmed, the incident highlights the precarious position of Indian nationals, who represent over 12 percent of the global maritime workforce. Since the outbreak of hostilities on February 28, at least 15 seafarers have lost their lives in similar attacks within the region.

In response to the mounting risks, India’s Directorate General of Shipping has issued a directive prohibiting recruitment companies and shipowners from deploying Indian crews on vessels traveling through the strait. The government has also lodged a formal protest with Tehran, summoning the deputy ambassador following recent fatalities. Masters of vessels still operating in the Persian Gulf are now required to maintain heightened vigilance and continuously monitor navigational warnings to mitigate the threats posed by the conflict.
