Thailand implements active shooter drills in schools after deadly attack

At Bangkok’s Surasamontree School, the new reality is stark: police officers in tactical gear simulate armed incursions to train students in survival. These exercises, mandated by an August 10 directive from Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong, focus on split-second decision-making. Students practice barricading doors, using furniture to block entrances, and, in extreme scenarios, physically restraining an attacker. The shift aims to replace panic with muscle memory, ensuring that both staff and pupils have a pre-rehearsed plan for when violence inevitably erupts.

Beyond these drills, schools are deploying handheld metal detectors and conducting bag searches to intercept weapons before they reach campus. Visistsak Vipattanamongkol, superintendent of the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, emphasizes that this move toward proactive preparedness is a response to the unpredictable nature of modern threats. While school director Onitcha Kochana notes that the training provides essential, life-saving knowledge, the challenge remains: balancing these high-security measures with the need to maintain an environment where students feel safe rather than besieged. The government’s goal is to transition from reactive measures to a sustainable culture of vigilance, acknowledging that schools must now function as fortified spaces.
