Turkey Halts Diesel Tax to Combat Inflation

To curb soaring fuel costs and mitigate inflationary pressure, the Turkish government has officially suspended the special consumption tax on diesel. The presidential decree, published in the country's Official Gazette, marks a tactical shift in economic policy as officials attempt to stabilize consumer prices through the end of August.

The suspension provides a temporary reprieve for the transportation and logistics sectors, though the relief is strictly time-bound. Beginning September 1, the tax will resume with a monthly incremental increase of 3 Turkish lira. This phased restoration is scheduled to continue until the levy reaches 13.9006 lira per liter by January 1, returning the rate to its former baseline.

While diesel is now exempted from the sliding-scale tax adjustment system, gasoline and LPG remain subject to the existing framework. This arrangement for other fuels will persist until October 1, at which point the government intends to terminate the sliding-scale mechanism entirely.
