Canadian representatives are working against the clock to neutralize the threat of sweeping levies announced by President Donald Trump last month. The White House has tied the potential 50% tariff to what it describes as discriminatory practices targeting American-made automobiles, dairy products, and alcohol. Daily sessions in Washington have yet to yield a breakthrough, as the current U.S. counter-offer falls short of Canadian requirements for broader relief.
While the goal remains a comprehensive agreement to stabilize trade, the impasse persists. Neither the office of the U.S. Trade Representative nor the staff of Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc have provided comment on the specific sticking points of the ongoing talks. The clock is ticking toward the August 19 deadline, leaving little room for further diplomatic maneuvering.
