Vijay’s TVK Government Faces Legislative Showdown Over Maiden Budget

The government is expected to unveil a series of populist measures, including potential increases to the women’s monthly honorarium and expansions to free bus travel. Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will lead the budget presentation, which also includes the unveiling of the ‘Vettri Thamizhagam’ Vision Document. An agriculture-specific budget is slated to follow on August 6.

However, the legislative agenda is eclipsed by the recent arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin. Authorities detained the DMK leader following a complaint from the TVK women’s wing regarding remarks he made about actress Trisha during a protest in Thanjavur. Stalin dismissed the legal action as a calculated diversion from the administration’s failure to address agrarian distress. Senior advocate and DMK leader NR Elango alleged that the arrest was an explicit attempt by the ruling party to block Stalin from participating in the budget session and questioning the government on critical policy failures. The assembly is now braced for a contentious debut as the opposition prepares to challenge the state's fiscal and administrative direction.
