Asian Markets Rally as Oil Prices Drop and Tech Sentiment Shifts

Asian stock markets surged on Wednesday as strong corporate earnings and a renewed appetite for technology stocks pushed Wall Street to record highs. A softening in global oil prices further bolstered investor sentiment, fueling a rally that saw Japan’s Nikkei climb 3.0% and South Korea’s index gain 4.1%.

The broader MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 2.4%, while Chinese blue chips added 0.7%. This optimism persisted despite a sharp 8.8% after-hours drop for AMD, which failed to satisfy investor expectations despite beating earnings targets. Similarly, SpaceX shares retreated 7.5% amid investor anxiety regarding the heavy capital expenditure required to sustain artificial intelligence growth. Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, noted that while the company performs well operationally, the necessity for additional capital will remain a primary concern for shareholders in coming quarters.

Oil prices continued to slide as reports of progress in diplomatic efforts regarding the Strait of Hormuz eased supply fears. Brent crude dropped 1.4% to $78.27 a barrel, moving significantly lower from its July peak of $102. CBA energy economist John Oh suggested that traffic through the critical waterway is recovering faster than anticipated, potentially leading to market oversupply. This cooling in energy costs provided relief from inflation concerns, driving 10-year Treasury yields down to 4.603%. Consequently, markets have recalibrated expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in September, with the probability falling to 57%. Despite these shifts, Federal Reserve official Jeff Schmid maintained a hawkish stance, advocating for tighter policy to reach the central bank's 2% inflation target.
