US Commerce Department Eyes Expansion of Metals Tariff List

Federal regulators released a pre-publication notice this Tuesday outlining the expansion, though the document notably omits a submission deadline for public feedback. The proposed additions to the existing steel, aluminum, and copper derivative duties include specialized equipment such as straddle carriers, mobile lifting frames, and various tanker trailers.

Beyond heavy machinery, the list incorporates essential infrastructure goods like electric conductor cables, fire extinguishers, and heat exchange parts. The scope extends to the chemical sector, specifically targeting filled steel containers for oxygen, propylene, and liquefied propane. The agency is also considering levies on aluminum powder and agricultural-use trailers, marking a broad attempt to capture derivative metal products under the umbrella of national security protections.
