Italy pushes for external migrant hubs following Ceuta border surge

Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi argued that the bloc must move beyond reactive measures, proposing a system of external centers to manage asylum claims and facilitate returns. This proposal arrives as the EU attempts to apply its new Migration Pact, which faces its first significant stress test following the breach of the land border between Morocco and Spain. The influx has reignited long-standing tensions over burden-sharing and border security that have divided the union since 2015.

While European Commissioner Magnus Brunner maintained that the bloc successfully contained the situation using existing protocols, individual member states are seeking tougher measures. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has advocated for an emergency mechanism that would permit the temporary suspension of asylum registrations during mass arrivals. Meanwhile, Morocco attributed the chaos to social media misinformation and trafficking networks, even as Italy took the unilateral step of suspending Schengen passport-free travel with Spain for one month to signal the gravity of the security challenge.
