Aung San Suu Kyi Appears in Rare Photos During ICRC Visit

Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with an International Committee of the Red Cross representative in Naypyitaw on Monday, according to government officials. The encounter, documented in four photographs, offers a rare glimpse of the 81-year-old Nobel laureate, whose health and location have remained largely obscured since 2021.

Government spokeswoman Khine Khine Soe confirmed the meeting with Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC’s resident representative, via Telegram. The images depict Suu Kyi in traditional attire within a spare, wood-paneled room. One frame shows her cutting a birthday cake inscribed with the date June 29, 2026, marking a departure from the strict isolation that has characterized her detention since the February 2021 military coup.

Suu Kyi is currently serving a 27-year sentence on charges widely condemned as politically motivated. While authorities announced a move to house arrest earlier this year alongside a partial sentence commutation, access to the former leader remains tightly restricted. The military junta has consistently rebuffed international requests for contact, including diplomatic overtures from ASEAN. Despite official assurances regarding her physical condition, the lack of independent verification leaves significant uncertainty surrounding her true status and the circumstances of her ongoing confinement.
