Nepal’s Schooling Crisis Demands Urgent Political Action

The Bhotekoshi floods have shuttered 11 schools and displaced over 1,300 students, turning classrooms into makeshift shelters for the homeless. For the 14,500 children affected across Bagmati Province, the interruption of daily routine risks becoming a permanent barrier to their development unless national and international leaders intervene immediately.

Nepal’s Schooling Crisis Demands Urgent Political Action

The scale of the disruption in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading is profound. With 28 of 29 local holding centers currently occupying school buildings, thousands of children are effectively locked out of their learning environments. Education Cannot Wait has pledged $1 million to assist 17,000 students, yet this remains a stopgap measure. True recovery depends on the government's ability to establish 68 planned Temporary Learning Centers while ensuring that schools are rebuilt to withstand future climate-driven disasters.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the emotional toll on the 216 affected teachers and their pupils requires an integrated response. Psychosocial support and counseling must be embedded into the curriculum to address the trauma of displacement and bereavement. By mobilizing educators effectively and securing the international replenishment of global emergency funds on November 5, policymakers can bridge the gap between temporary relief and a sustainable, resilient education system for Nepal’s youth.
