Child killed in drone strike on Belgorod playground

A thirteen-year-old girl died Sunday after a Ukrainian drone struck near a playground in the Russian border village of Printsevka. The blast injured two other children, aged seven and nine, who remain under medical care, according to acting regional governor Alexander Shavayev, who confirmed the casualties via Telegram.

Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's commissioner for children's rights, described the attack as an inhumane act. The incident underscores the persistent danger to civilians in the border region, where strikes have become a recurring feature of the ongoing conflict. Ukraine's Defence Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the strike.

This tragedy follows a pattern of civilian casualties in areas adjacent to the fighting. In April 2025, a Russian missile strike on Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine, killed 20 people, including nine children, when shrapnel hit a residential neighborhood near a playground. The International Criminal Court currently maintains active arrest warrants for both Lvova-Belova and President Vladimir Putin, citing the unlawful deportation of children from occupied Ukrainian territories, charges the Kremlin continues to deny.
