Trump Pauses Iran Strikes Pending Rapid Nuclear and Trade Deal

President Donald Trump announced a suspension of planned military strikes against Iran, citing requests from regional partners for a diplomatic window to resolve the nuclear standoff and restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The administration is now betting on a high-stakes negotiation to avert further escalation in the Middle East.

Trump Pauses Iran Strikes Pending Rapid Nuclear and Trade Deal

Trump confirmed on his Truth Social platform that he agreed to hold off on military action following a dialogue with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. While the identity of the requesting nations remains undisclosed, the President linked the pause to a potential agreement that would secure the total reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The region remains on edge as the conflict, which has already disrupted 20% of global oil and LNG flows, continues to drive up energy prices and inflation.

Despite the diplomatic pivot, Israel maintains a hardline stance. Eli Cohen, Israel’s energy minister, underscored that his nation reserves the right to strike Iran independently should Tehran move to advance its ballistic missile program or nuclear ambitions. This posture aligns with discussions held in Washington last week between Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where both leaders reviewed a range of tactics including economic pressure and force.

Tehran continues to characterize the U.S. threats as psychological warfare. Acting defense minister Brigadier General Majid Ebn Al-Reza stated that Iran is focusing on bolstering its deterrence capabilities rather than remaining passive. The volatility is further compounded by recent maritime incidents off the coast of Oman, where tankers reported explosions and projectile damage, signaling that the security of energy export routes remains precarious. With Brent crude prices having surged 24% following the collapse of a previous ceasefire, the administration faces significant internal pressure to finalize a deal that balances geopolitical security with domestic economic stability.
