Anand, who spent his entire life in Iran, described the government's intervention as a lifeline for the community. The rescue effort gained momentum after Shergill presented the community’s plight to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs. According to Shergill, official channels responded within two hours of the request, ensuring the majority of the 70 to 100 Sikh families long settled in the region were brought home.
This mission is part of a broader evacuation effort involving thousands of citizens. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh recently confirmed to the Rajya Sabha that 2,557 Indian nationals have been moved out of Iran via Armenia or Azerbaijan since February 2026. While these families have reached safety, approximately 7,000 Indian citizens—including students, seafarers, and workers—remain in Iran as the government continues to monitor the security landscape.
