Motilal Oswal sees Indian G-Sec index inclusion delay as short-term

Financial veteran Motilal Oswal dismissed concerns over Bloomberg’s decision to postpone the inclusion of Indian Government Securities in its Global Aggregate Index, characterizing the move as a temporary operational pause rather than a fundamental flaw in the nation’s debt market infrastructure.

Speaking at the 9th Motilal Oswal Business Impact Conference in Mumbai, Oswal argued that global index providers are simply exercising caution amid broader geopolitical volatility, including instability in the Middle East. While Bloomberg cited the need to observe foreign investor onboarding workflows, Oswal maintained that India’s transaction processing systems remain among the fastest in the world. He expects the inclusion to materialize within the next three months once these technical assessments stabilize.

Beyond the index debate, Oswal highlighted a shift in foreign capital flows. Institutional investors are pivoting back to Indian equities, driven by attractive valuations and a strengthening corporate earnings outlook. Despite the current delay, he emphasized that India’s debt market offers a scale that international managers cannot afford to overlook in the medium term.
