AfDB and Standard Bank Partner on $332 Million SME Funding Initiative

A $332 million capital injection from the African Development Bank into Standard Bank Group aims to revitalize South African small and medium-sized enterprises. This initiative, structured as a social bond, prioritizes businesses led by women and seeks to bridge the persistent gender-based financing gap in the domestic market.

The financing utilizes a Flac instrument, a debt mechanism introduced by the South African Reserve Bank in January 2026 to bolster the banking resolution framework. Standard Bank has listed the security on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, marking its first social bond of this type. Beyond the primary capital, a $1 million grant from the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa programme provides technical support for digital payment adoption and credit record development.

Standard Bank executives emphasize that with approximately 3.2 million SMEs accounting for 60% of national employment, the sector remains the primary engine for economic growth. This investment builds on a long-standing partnership between the two institutions that began in 2008. A previous 2024 facility successfully supported 5,425 SMEs—exceeding its initial target—across sectors including manufacturing, agriculture, and retail.
