Russian Ballistic Strikes on Kyiv Leave Nine Dead

At least nine people are dead and 28 wounded after a barrage of ballistic missiles slammed into Kyiv on Saturday. The assault, which hit residential buildings and warehouses, marks the second major strike on the Ukrainian capital this week, further exposing the city's critical shortage of advanced air defense systems.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a residential complex in the Shevchenkivskyi district suffered a partial collapse, trapping residents beneath the debris of the first and second floors. Witnesses reported more than a dozen explosions echoing across the city, followed by widespread fires and localized power outages as emergency services scrambled to reach survivors.

This escalation follows a week of intense aerial activity, including a separate attack Thursday that killed nine people near Kryvyi Rih. The recent surge in ballistic fire highlights a tactical gap in Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, as these projectiles reach targets at hypersonic speeds that current interceptors struggle to neutralize. The incident also follows regional tensions after a stray missile landed in Poland earlier in the week, underscoring the volatility of the ongoing conflict.
